A Plan in the making for Shoreham Beach
A group of community-spirited volunteers – Shoreham Beach Neighbourhood Forum (SBNF) – have been busy developing a Neighbourhood Plan for the Marine Ward area. Having spent significant time engaging with the local community – those who live and work in Shoreham Beach – the group now have a first draft of the plan ready for public consultation and feedback.
Neighbourhood Plans are on the increase across the country. They offer an important opportunity for communities to help shape both the development and conservation of where they live and work. Plans cover essential community aspects such as: transport, schooling, property development, community facilities and green spaces – with the aim of setting out a clear vision for the future of a neighbourhood.
Shoreham Beach has changed a lot of over the years – and continues to grapple with the ever-present push to regenerate and develop alongside wanting to conserve its unique landscape and somewhat eclectic nature. This year alone sees developments at Ferry Road, Tidal Wall improvements and commercial opportunities at Beach Green.
“Young and old love Shoreham Beach” says SBNF Chair Dawn Clenton-Sparey, “and we think it’s really important local people have a chance to positively influence how the area develops in the future. We are really encouraged by how many people have got involved with the Neighbourhood Plan so far – and the brilliant ideas they’ve put forward for The Beach”.
To learn more about current developments on Shoreham Beach, and hear about the draft plan, head down to one of the public consultation events SBNF is holding on the 6th & 8th October (details below). James Appleton (Adur & Worthing Council) will be speaking and independent urban planning specialist AECOM will be presenting different options for a new school site, parking solutions, allotments and housing. You will also be able to see a video showcasing a ‘future Shoreham Beach’, focusing on transport issues and opportunities.
