Brighton Lions Club Fireworks Extravaganza

It’s not rocket science!

(Well, maybe it is.)

The Brighton Lions Club Fireworks Extravaganza 2019.

It began when a handful of men, the members of Brighton Lions Club, agreed to pool their families’ fireworks to provide a display for the girls at the orphanage in Eastern Road, Brighton. That was in 1952, and it was the start of the annual display that has been described as the biggest and best firework display on the south coast. It has even been rated by a national newspaper as one of the top ten displays in the country!

It morphed into a public event to raise money for charity and was, for many years, held at Withdean Stadium before moving to the County Cricket Ground in Hove. Another move to Brighton Racecourse a few years ago has enabled Brighton Lions Club to use bigger and more spectacular fireworks.

This year’s display will be on Sunday, 3rd November, at the racecourse.  Gates will be opened at 6.00pm and the display is scheduled to start at 7.30pm.  Admission prices will be £12 for adults, £6 for children under 16 and free for the under-5s.  A family ticket for two adults and two children will cost £30. Refreshments will be available, including a licensed bar, and there is plenty of free parking. Children’s fairground rides at additional cost. But please remember that, in the interest of public safety, NO FIREWORKS MAY BE BROUGHT INTO THE GROUND. This ban includes sparklers.

“Our aim,” said Brian Slater, co-ordinator of the display, “is to provide a safe display for families at a reasonable price while raising funds for our important charitable work.”

This work includes providing a present for each child in the children’s hospital at Christmas and Easter and helping needy local people who would otherwise slip through the cracks in the welfare system. Local food banks are supported along with various local organisations offering help to children and the elderly.  Brighton Lions also organise Project Wenceslas, a scheme to assist people in the city who experience fuel poverty.

Tickets for the firework extravaganza can be bought at the gate on the night but early bird offers provide savings up till 26th October. Full details on Brighton Lions website,
